Sleep Studies:

Sleep Studies are ordered by a physician to evaluate or treat a disturbance of sleep. Individuals sleep in a regular bed and typically will have monitoring equipment applied to the scalp to measure brain wave patterns and to the body to measure physiologic functions including heart rate, oxygen level, respiratory rate and movement. The study starts with a general introduction to the equipment by the technician and it ends the following morning. Patients should where comfortable clothing and take any evening medication that is prescribed. We want to provide an environment that is comfortable and close to the experience of sleeping at home. On occasion a light sedative may be prescribed for individuals who can't get to sleep. The rooms have a bathroom and shower and, if necessary patients can leave from the lab to go to work the next day.

CPAP Titration:

This study is designed to generate a treatment prescription for individuals diagnosed with sleep apnea. The monitoring is the same as that for a sleep study (See Above). A CPAP mask is a very soft NON-LATEX mask that fits over the nose or nose and mouth through which a flow of air is applied to keep the airway open. In the majority of patients with symptomatic sleep apnea this treatment results in restoration of a good nights sleep and the elimination of snoring.

Pediatric Studies:

Sleep Apnea is fairly common in children. Studies suggest that up to one third of children treated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder will, in fact, suffer from sleep apnea with symptom resolution noted following treatment. Our lab is equipped to provide studies of children accompanied by their parents. Our American Board of Sleep Medicine certified physicians have expertise in the evaluation and treatment of children and adults with sleep disorders.

Daytime Studies:

For individuals who work 2nd or 3rd shift we can provide a study during daylight hours to accommodate your schedule.

Narcolepsy Evaluation:.

Narcolepsy is a disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness that results from an abnormal brain chemistry. This disorder can be extremely debilitating though it generally responds well to stimulant medication. Many people who are profoundly sleepy will have an otherwise normal overnight sleep study. In those cases individuals are often referred for a follow-up study to see how quickly they fall asleep during the day. This type of study consists of several naps throughout the day and monitoring by a technician to identify the stages of sleep noted during a nap. Normally it takes us about 90 minutes to get to dream sleep. Patients diagnosed with narcolepsy will demonstrate the development of dream sleep within the 20 minute time period of a daytime nap.

Verification of Wakefulness:

This study is used to verify that individuals who need to stay awake for long periods such as truck drivers or pilots are able to do so. More commonly, employers request this type of study in an individual who has been diagnosed with a sleep disorder that is characterized by excessive daytime sleepyness. It may be requested yearly as a supporting document to ensure job safety.
